Gabberissue #20: The Future

Gabberissue #20: The Future

I visited a tarot reader for the first time the other day. She flipped over a bunch of sticky cards, tapped away on her iPad, and said the word ‘um’ maybe 47 times. I left feeling more confused (and ripped off) than satisfied, but realised due to the fuckery that is 2020, not even the most skilled at telling the future can stab a guess at what’s about to come next.

It’s reassuring in a collective way I suppose; we’re all in a ‘present’ bubble, unable to make real plans for the future, and rather just rolling out of bed each day and deciding to take it for what it is.

This Gabberissue celebrates our new unknown as we tumble towards tomorrow.

Officially the unofficial AWARD School issue, we speak to students of the program, asking them to share their take on what ‘the future’ means since graduating.

Our Gift of the Gabberer this month is the incredible and wonderful Rikki Burns (and I’m not just saying that because she’s my ex-boss).

We also speak to the very, very secret and anonymous art collective, Heavy Duty.

Talented Lauren Ami MacDonald talks to us about how quitting advertising made her happier than ever.

And the great partners, who are also conveniently great chums, Lucas and Jack have blessed us with a super duper Team Talk.

As this issue will convey, a tumultuous tomorrow makes us grounded with enjoying the time directly in front of us, whether that means painting more, talking to friends, or helping make the world a better place.

Hopefully the future is what you make it to be.

Thank you to all the lovely contributors and the absolute legends Jess and Siobhan for letting me guest-edit this issue.

Love, Oli
