Here, Charlotte shows us that empathy does exist, in her top 10 empathic experiences of her career so far. This also reads as a handy guide to get going if you just took that next rung on the ladder.

That time when…

  1. My boss literally turned off my computer so that I did “leave it till tomorrow”.

  2. I’d just been chewed out by a client and my CD took me for lunch, just because.

  3. My boss stayed back a little later to help problem solve the brief I was trying to crack, but that I clearly had a mental block with.

  4. Our MD let me take the pitch stage for the first time, and practised with me for hours beforehand.

  5. My planning director told me that 50% of planning is confidence and believing in your argument.

  6. My boss told me, “I know you don’t know how to do this, so I’m not going to get mad at you for not being able to do it, that’s what learning is.”

  7. Our head of studio wouldn’t leave until all of his designers had finished their work in case they needed anything, he ended up leaving at 3am.

  8. A colleague talked to me seriously about burn out, having noticed I was working too hard, then went through my deliverables and prioritised with me.

  9. My boss saw me sending off emails late and told me get off my computer!

  10. My boss stood up for me in a client presentation and pushed back on the way they were speaking to the agency folks.

These moments may seem small but to someone trying to find their feet in a new career, they make a huge difference.
