GABBERISH #25: Self Promotion

GABBERISH #25: Self Promotion

The Self Promotion issue brought to you by Youngbloods. Words by Charlotte Goodsir, Social Strategist at The Monkeys. Gif by Aïcha Wijland, Art Director at The Monkeys.

At Youngbloods we pride ourselves in being the mates that help you make it, so we decided to bring you a full Gabberish issue on how to make it. Now, we want to preface this article, and issue, by letting you know the irony is not lost on us. We know it’s crazy that a bunch of under 30s have anything to say about our few years in the industry, but if we hear one more story about “starting in the mail room and working your way up” we’re gonna scream.

So, the self promotion starts here—for us, and for you.

First up, how do we get recognition when we have five years (or less) in an industry and why is it important?

Recognition, whether in the form of a LinkedIn post or an all staff email, starts to build your personal brand. It’s a small stepping stone into future opportunities, future jobs and bigger pay checks. It’s an investment in yourself.

What if we aren’t the top ten in AWARD school? If we don’t have an uncle who’s a CD? As entry level and mid-weights we may not have too many campaigns in our book despite the thousands of hours work. So, as a client would say, “we need to sweat the assets we already have”.

When compiling this issue we wanted to create something that the YB community does well.

To give young people the support and knowledge they need to step up to the next level, or side step from accounts to planning, or diagonal step from agency accounts to production house.

Our Youngbloods community has reflected on self promotion to help others while successfully promoting themselves. It’s a win-win!

In Gift of the Gabberer we contemplate promoting yourself like you’re one of the hottest agencies around. With SPECIAL’s Tom Martin and Jules Schrieber (interview by Matt Bladin).

Simon Mullins considers how to create your own brand of you.

Tilly Treloar and Bianka Krook reflect on what you should be doing to promote up the corporate ladder in your first 3 years.

Nethmee Goonesekera and Emerson Domingo consider how your background can impact the way you self promote.

Jessie Roper has worked out how self-described introverts can self promote

Anneliese Sullivan talks to diverse people about standing out when you don’t quite fit in.

Claudia Sarosiek reckons you can put your whole essence into your own logo.

Shaun McFarlane and Josh Brown trust each other to promote each other—even after they’ve broken up as creative partners.

Harry Roth and Zac Blakemore tackle selling yourself to your next potential creative partner.

And Lizzie Wood talks avoiding the ick in a creative’s unavoidable side-hustle: the LinkedIn boast.

Youngbloods is comprised of a bunch of high-functioning, over-achieving young humans who want to make the industry more creative and more inclusive than ever before.
